Still good as new!, May 26, 2009

    EliteTempleton (Michigan) –

We bought this shortly after adopting our dog.
Since then it has seen alot of use(trails, car rides, vet visits, walks, etc) and still works as good as ever. It’s actually now a hand-me-down to our other older dog(whom we adopted later), where the handle to lift him into the truck has really come in handy recently.
We’ve had it for pushing 4 years now and it still is holding together very well.
We like this product so much we ordered the “Ruff Wear Approach Pack” as an upgrade because we are able to hit the trails even more now and we like that he can bring his own gear. Unlike a big box store backpack we bought, that only lasted 1 day and that was $20, we expect the the Approach Pack will last for many years of regular use, just as this harness has.
It’s adjusters work well as we have to adjust them in the spring and fall to account for the fur and weight changes. The straps have a stretch loop on them to contain the extra strap material, and there is enough extra to loosen it up quite a bit, even if your pooch over eats during the holidays, it should still fit fine.
I setup a second leash attached to the car seat loop and I just snap them to that via the harnesses and viola! they have their own seatbelts and it keeps them in the back seat.
Anymore I just look at Ruffwear first when I am looking for a pet product, as their products have withstood all the abuse my active family can throw at it so far.

LIGHT WEIGHT NARROW STRAPS AND SMALL, CHEAP BUCKLES KEEP LOOSENING SO I HAVE TO READJUST HARNESS TO SECURE MY DOG., March 21, 2010

This review is from: Ruff Wear Web Master Harness XX-Small Red (Misc.)

PROS: The design of this dog safety harness is the very best I have come across. In comparison to the other harness I use which is the heavy duty more strongly built Ruff Rider ROADIE Canine Restraint harness, this RUFF WEAR Web Master harness prevents a doggie escape artist from wriggling backwards out the harness, or dropping backwards out of the harness. This is the only dog harness design I have found where there is the extra advantage of a belly strap that is situated behind the dog’s rib cage and therefore keeps the dog from backing out of or dropping out of the harness.

CONS”: My dog weighs 70 lbs and has a 34 inch chest. The Ruff Wear Web Master straps are too narrow (only 1 inch wide) and thin (single ply) and flimsy. In an automobile accident, these narrow, light weight straps nearly cut into my dog’s skin under the kind of pressure exerted in an automobile accident. Luckily, his skin was not broken, because the accident we were in happened at under 10 mph when he was thrown to the floor from his seat. I hate to think what would have happend in a higher speed accident.

I strongly urge the manufacturer to use wider (at least two inches) and thicker (double thickness or airline belt quality) straps.

CON: The buckles on the Ruff Wear Web Master buckles are very light weight plastic material. I would not trust these buckles to support my 70-lb dog. In addition, these buckles allow slippage of the straps….very dangerous. They do not hold their adjustment. I continually have to adjust the straps to fit the dog each and every time I put the harness on. If the dog has to wear the harness for a few hours, I have to adjust the harness because over time, it gets looser and looser on him. The buckles have to be better at holding the straps at length you set.

CON: Padding on the straps need to be designed so they don’t keep slipping out of place. Especially on a larger dog, one-size-fits-all padding slides to one side or the other and doesn’t stay centered. It also tends to flip on itself so that the unpadded side of the padding component is against the dog’s body.

I want the manufacturer of the Ruff Wear Web Master to keep their brilliant three-point design. However, something has to be done about preventing the straps from becoming loose. Use wider straps in the harnesses for bigger dogs. And use heavier duty, better quality buckles that really hold the strap adjustments in place.

If I had to haul my dog up out of the water in a hurry onto a boat, or if I had to lower my dog over a cliff from a substantial height, I would not trust the current flimsy straps and light weight buckles to hold my dog.

I think I will have to look into what the US military uses for their dogs which they lower from helicopters. Maybe there is a European manufacturer of such harnesses. I have seen photos of New Foundland rescuer dogs being dropped out of helicopters into the sea to rescue people and then being lifted out of the sea back onto the helicopter.

I am willing to pay a lot more for a harness I can really depend on in an emergency. I would like a harness for my dog in the car that will be equal to my own car seatbelt. I don’t want to be in a situation where any size dog, big or little, is flying around in the cabin of my car in an accident, because the dog could cause severe injury to me, not to mention the possibility of the dog dying from his own injuries.

    Warning…, May 15, 2010

The post by “Doggie Stars” is thoughtful and accurate from my perspective. I purchased two of these harnesses – one medium and one large. At first they seemed wonderful, then I began to notice the numerous cons already noted. One additional comment and warning: After about 1 week and dog walk #5 or so the stitching that secures the metal loop that is used to attach a leash broke away from the material. In short, the clip completely detached from the harness and my dog broke free. Luckily we were still in an easement so he was not harmed, but he could have been seriously injured or killed if we had been on a busy road. This harness provides a false of security. DO NOT PUT YOUR DOG’S SAFETY AT RISK. The manufacturer should pull this harness from the market until this and the above problems are corrected.
